About us
Born in South Africa. Shaped in Japan. Growing Globally.
Ikigai is a purpose-driven organisation that connects people through education, sport, and cultural exchange.
Rooted in the Japanese philosophy of Ikigai, meaning “reason for being”, our mission is to help individuals and communities discover their purpose, unlock their potential, and create opportunities that last a lifetime.
Through our foundation, mentorship platform, and sports programs, we bridge South Africa and Japan, two nations bound by shared values of discipline, respect, and continuous improvement.
From classrooms to high-performance arenas, we create experiences that build character, leadership, and global awareness.
Our work is driven by collaboration. We partner with schools, professional athletes, companies, and cultural institutions to design programs that combine learning, sport, and personal growth. Whether it is a student’s first exchange trip to Japan, a young athlete discovering mentorship, or a corporate team learning from endurance and purpose, Ikigai is about connecting people through meaningful experiences.
Every project we undertake reflects our core belief:
Through passion and purpose, anything is possible.
About the Founder
Zukile Ncube is an educator, mentor, and founder of a movement inspired by the Japanese concept of ikigai, which means “reason for being.”
He first encountered this philosophy while living in Japan for four years as part of the JET Programme, where he worked as an English teacher and rugby player. For someone who had never left South Africa before, the experience was transformative. Immersed in Japanese culture, he developed a deep appreciation for its core values of integrity, respect, discipline, humility, and an unwavering commitment to continuous improvement.
These lessons shaped his worldview. Zukile came to see that ikigai is not just an idea, it is a way of living with purpose and contribution. Upon returning to South Africa, he founded Ikigai, which has since evolved into a broader ecosystem encompassing Ikigai Mentorship, Ikigai Foundation, and Project Possible. Together, these initiatives use education, sport, and storytelling to connect people, cultures, and opportunities.
Zukile’s mission is to help others discover their own ‘ikigai’, their sense of meaning, by creating access to experiences that challenge, inspire, and develop the whole person. Through exchange programs, mentorship, and endurance projects, he continues to build bridges between South Africa and Japan, grounded in shared values and mutual respect.
In addition to his work with Ikigai, Zukile teaches and coaches rugby at Bishops Diocesan College in Cape Town, where he remains deeply involved in education and youth development. His approach is guided by the same principle that shaped his journey:
A life of purpose begins with the courage to learn, grow, and give.
